Public DNS Services

Welcome to Public-DNS.org. This site's purpose is to provide a directory of free DNS related services. We're intentionally excluding providers like GoDaddy and Linode which offer free DNS hosting, but only to their paying customers. All of the DNS providers listed below provide DNS services without a requirement that you first become a paying customer.

Free DNS Hosting Providers

• ClouDNS - their free plan includes hosting for up to 3 DNS zones.
• CloudFlare - their free plan provides solid DNS hosting with a user-friendly interface. There does not appear to be a limit in terms of how many DNS records or zones you can host with CloudFlare.
• Hurricane Electric Hosted DNS - this is another solid option. They also have some great IPv6 information, including details on what DNS records are needed for IPv6 support.
• NS1 - their free plan includes hosting up to 500,000 queries per month, and up to 50 DNS records. Plenty for a low traffic website.

Free DNS Monitoring Providers

• DNS Check - they offer a free DNS record checking service which enables you to monitor DNS records, and get notified if any of them either go offline, or start returning a different value than what's expected. Includes support for checking a number of DNS record types that aren't normally supported, like MX and SPF records. Also includes functionality that can be used to request DNS record updates, and troubleshoot DNS record issues.
